Attic Fan Troubleshoot

Attic fans, like any electrical component, may malfunction. You can troubleshoot the fan for DIY repair or call our insulation professionals for assistance, as we specialize in all attic-related matters.

How to troubleshoot the attic fan

Check Power Supply: Since dust can cause the fan to malfunction, you should consider cleaning the fan and then after returning power check if it’s working. If it doesn’t work you should take a look at the fuse and confirm if it has blown. If it has blown you should consider getting a new one.

Clean Fan Blades: Remove debris or dust buildup on fan blades that could impede rotation.

Inspect Thermostat: Verify the thermostat settings are correct and functioning properly.

Clear Vents: Ensure attic vents are unobstructed to allow proper airflow.

Check Fan Belts: If the fan isn’t working and the fuse and the breaker are okay you should open the fan and check if the belts have broken. You should also check and see if there are any obstructions. If the fan belt has broken you should replace it with a new one. You should also remove any obstructions that might be there.

Check Wiring: If the belts appear to be okay, check the wires and test them for activity using a voltage tester. If there is no activity in the wires you should call a professional electrician to repair the wiring.

Ventilation Fan Motor installation

Test motor: If you test the wires and they show power you should test the fan motor and switch and see if there is any activity.

If any of the parts is malfunctioning you should replace it. If the parts are functioning well, your fan might be dead and you need to purchase and install a new one. When installing the fan ensure that you follow the directions given by the manufacturer.
